Things are going well and I’ve already taken bookings for Cheshire, Staffordshire and Lancashire weddings, as well as continuing to work in London and the South East.
I’ve put a lot of miles on my car, and listened to even more music than I usually do!
As with previous years I’ve tried to avoid the obvious photos in favour of the unique moments that make each wedding different and tell a story, and that is something I cannot do without my amazing brides and grooms. I say it every year, but its my cool couples and their bat shit crazy wedding guests that set my photos apart from normal wedding photography!
You rock!
This year I'm going to give you the choice I never had. (If you know the film that line came from, we will definitely get along) You can either sit back and watch the photos as a video on the link above, or scroll through them nice and big at your own pace below.
If this made you smile, laugh or go "Awwww" at least once, please share it, or write me a nice comment below.
If you want to get in touch about me photographing your wedding please contact me on the link below.
At the time of writing I still have some dates left for 2019 and I'm taking bookings for 2020 and 2021.

Each year the weddings I am asked to photograph keep getting cooler, more now than ever before couples want to do things differently and not follow rules or traditions, these are some of the most unique, crazy and fun wedding to photograph, and 2017 was full of them!
I was lucky enough to photograph some amazing locations from beaches, to back garden woodlands, and festival themed weddings to finally getting to work at the beautiful Asylum Chapel in London, but more important than any of the venues, what makes my job so much fun and my photos so unique are all the different people I get to work with and I want to say thank you to every couple who invited me to be part of their wedding day, as always, I couldn’t do this without you, you rock!
I started off the day with lots of photos of Lilly, her family, bridesmaids and 2 cats at their home in Clapham, South London, before heading to meet Tom and the rest of the guests at Home House. Which is a stunning private members club, occupying a terrace of Georgian townhouses in Portman Square in the heart of London.
Home House is an absolutely stunning 18th century building, with a variety of rooms and bars. It also has one of the most magnificent stair cases in London!
I am honoured to say that I am one of the recommended photographers at Home House and have photographed a few weddings and other functions here over the last couple of years.
They have one rule at Home House, displayed on the wall as you enter:
“Nudity is discouraged”. Naughtiness, on the other hand, is de rigueur."
Although there was no nudity and not too much naughtiness as the day went on, just a fantastic celebration of 2 people in love surrounded by their closest family and friends.
Jen is a stylist so all the little details and flowers were her own creation, Phil is part of a DJ collective (Urban Warfare Crew) so we knew the party would be great!
After the ceremony at Croydon Registry Office, we popped over the park opposite for a few group shots then did some very cool and casual couple portraits as we all walked over to The Oval Tavern for the reception and BBQ. Entertainment was from local ska band Ten Tonne Ska, who play a cover of Nirvana’s ‘Lithium’ like you’ve never heard before!
White Lies - To Lose My Life
“Let’s grow old together, and die at the same.”
How beautiful is this line? It sums up everything that true love is about.
I get goosebumps every time I hear this. It’s a gloriously perfect dark pop song.
The Cure – The Love Cats
I could have chosen many songs from the Cure, ‘Friday I’m In Love’ (if you’re getting married on a Friday), ‘Love Song’ (Which Robert Smith wrote as his wedding gift for his wife.) but I went for ‘The Love Cats’ purely because I have never heard it played as a first dance song at a wedding and I think it would make a great up beat alternative to a slow dance.
It is also one of Ollie, my 5 year old son's favourite songs, and it was the first 12” record I bought him.
Jefferson Airplane – Somebody To Love
Another song that gives me goose bumps whenever I hear it, this is one of my favourite songs of all time. In fact, Jefferson Airplane make my “best songs of all time” list twice as I absolutely love “White Rabbit” as well.
Tiger Army - Santa Carla Twilight
This goth infused psychobilly gem is a love song about vampires set in “the murder capital of the world” what’s not to like about that?
If you’re a Lost Boys fan you need this played at your wedding!
Wonk Unit – I Love My Nagging Wife
I’m honoured that I can count these guys as friends. If you feel weddings can get a little solemn, give this this tongue in cheek punk rock sing-a-long a spin and watch everyone’s faces brighten up at the light-hearted lyrics.
The only ones – Another Girl Another Planet
Here’s one for the original punks. This song and the compilation album I first heard it on (Sound of the Suburbs) got me through my college years. Ok so it might actually be about heroin addiction, but no one will be listening to the lyrics that closely.
Billy Idol – White Wedding
Because its Billy fucking Idol!
You cannot say you are planning an alt wedding and not play this song. It was regarded as cheesy for many years but I’m bringing it back and I’m not ashamed to say I love it. Play this straight after your first dance and it’s guaranteed to get EVERYBODY on the dance floor.
Sick Of It All – Sanctuary
Fancy something a bit heavier that still carries that loving feeling?
Maybe instead of a slow dance you fancy a circle pit, or lining up the in-laws on each side of the room and kicking off the evening celebrations with a “wall of Death”?
I’m a big a fan of this band, my first tattoo was the Sick Of It All ‘Alleyway Dragon’ logo.
Johnny Cash – I Walk The Line
Another artist that has so many songs you could choose for a wedding.
I have chosen ‘I walk the line’ because it is the song Dawn and I played during our recessional (The bit where you walk back down the aisle after you are married.) It’s a song about staying faithful to the one you love, and I also have the lyrics tattooed along my arm.
Tom Waits – Little Trip To Heaven
Probably the most conventional song on the list, but from the least conventional artist.
This song, and the whole of ‘Closing Time’ the album it comes from evokes that 3am feeling. It’s just the 2 of you, dancing alone in the club while the caretaker sweeps up around you.
And those lyrics! Just listen to them and tell me it’s not like Tom has written them personally for how you feel about the one you love?
And finally, I know I said it was a top 10 but here is the song Dawn and I had as our first dance.
Satellite Party – Awesome
Because Dawn is AWESOME!
Thanks for reading, you please feel free to leave any suggestions for more alternative wedding related songs in the comments below.
A playlist of these songs can be found on my Spotify here.
If you are getting married and you like any of the songs on this list, I know we get along so please check out the rest of site and give me shout if you want to chat about your wedding photography.
Each Blog post consists of 36 of my personal favourite photos from the wedding day.
I chose that number as it represents a roll of film having 36 exposures.

I met Brody Dalle, and photographed her for my first magazine cover, I photographed the weddings of a couple even more obsessed with Lego than I am, I travelled up and down the country photographing beautiful people and sharing their wedding day with them, and I got to make lots of new friends!
Here are some of the highlights, enjoy.....

More about them in a moment, but first a history lesson.
If you have been paying attention you will know that I photographed my first wedding waaaay back in '93. Back then everyone had an album, there really was no other way to view your wedding photos. They were also incredibly boring to look at and usually came in some kind of awful ivory plastic, with just one photo per page. I spent countless hours sticking photos to the page, then sticking a mount over the photo. Then peeling it off and sticking it down again, straighter.
Sometimes I even brought blank pages and hand cut a number of apertures in them so I could add more than one photo to a page, This was before album companies offered a range of different mounts and shapes.
Ahhh, the good ol' days.
Fast fwd a few years, and a break from shooting weddings between 2002 and 2009 (I worked in a portrait studio) and things had changed a lot in the wedding industry.
Digital happened and now everyone wanted their photos on disc/DVD/USB etc.
In some ways this is great, you get many more photos than you would have 15 years ago. Back then I may have only taken 100 photos all day on my film cameras, now I hand over 300+ fully edited awesome images to my couples. B
But what happens next? You might watch them on the laptop once or twice, get a couple printed for the office desk, then the DVD/USB sits in a draw. I say this from experience of how I have (miss)treated my own wedding photos taken in October 2012.
I noticed the trend changing last year, with more and more couples asking if I offered albums.
Well now I do!
Fine art wedding albums hand made in the UK, by a very cool, ethical and green as they can be company called Folio

You want everyone to write a little message to you on your wedding day, but all the signing books you have seen are really naff and cheesy?
Ta-da!
Introducing my brand spanking new, totally rad, personalised signing book!
30 pages, including a selection of images from your pre wedding photoshoot, and a number blank pages for your weddings guests to write their messages on.
Marvellous!

Pre wedding, or engagement photography sessions are great for many reasons.

I don't think I can write anything to accompany this.

When I first met with Brian and Rob to discuss the details of their wedding day, I knew we would get on great as it turned it a rather late night of drinking on the terrace of the hotel on a warm summers evening. It’s meeting clients that I instantly click with that makes this job so much fun and I am pleased to say many of my past wedding couples have kept in touch with me and become friends.
The wedding day itself was one big party, the conservatory room they got married in was bursting with guests, with some even having to peer in through doors and windows.
Thankfully the rain stopped for a few group photos, which involved me climbing onto the roof of the hotel. Then it was onto the BBQ, followed by a large selection of ice cream!
The afternoon was very chilled, with some guests wandering into nearby Oxford Street, or watching a game of football on TV in the hotel lounge, before the party started in the evening.
]]>
They choose to get married at Beacon House, A charming seafront property just down from Whitstable Castle and next to the brightly coloured beach huts in between Tankerton and Whitstable harbour.
Jamie and Becca wanted their day to be one big beach party, and it was! As soon as the ceremony was out of the way they had set up various games for people to play, and I provided loads of silly props for a "photobooth" style shoot, but the weather was so nice I was able to take these outside using the ship-lapped wall of the house. Guests where freely able to wander along the beach or down "The Street" a natural strip of shingle which runs out to sea for about half a mile.
There was no sit down meal, but a fantastic selection of food was on offer through out the afternoon, and then the ice cream man turned up on his bike for dessert and the day ended in typical beach party style with Jamie, and a few of his friends going for a dip in sea.
I have fought and wrestled to get it down to around 150, so you might want to put the kettle on and have a cup of tea while flicking through this post.
This is a personal collection of favourites that I think define my current style. They are in no particular order, and I've tried to jumble up the music and wedding photography, along with a few other bits and pieces I've taken along the way, as much as possible to keep it interesting to look at.
Which is my own No1 favourite photograph from 2013?
Apart from family photos (My son Ollie is in here a few times) my own favourite shot of the year has to be the black & White shot of Gallows that I took just before they played the 100 Club in London, so that's the shot I've started with.
Enjoy, and please leave a comment at the bottom.
Thank you to everyone who made these photos possible, all the brides, models, bands, make up artists, assistants and other photographers I have worked with over the last year.
Have a great 2014!

1. I get paid for it. Pretty obvious, but I don't work for free. It is increasingly common for couple to ask for a 2nd photographer to attend their wedding day, usually to capture events from the grooms point of view as well as the brides, Or if it is a particularly extravagant affair. Some photographers offer this service but in reality the 2nd shooter they use may be little more than an student photographer with out the the skill or experience required to deliver the results. Where as some photographers like myself offer a 2nd shooter as an optional extra and we charge for it, this ensures you get a great photographer on the day who will deliver the results expected.
2. I get the chance to try out new ideas. I photograph quite a few different areas of work, from live bands and portraits for magazines (willshootforrum.co.uk) to advertising and PR Events (martinhobby.co.uk) none of these other areas are quite like photographing a wedding. There is a lot of pressure on the main photographer at a wedding, and it can be quite stressful, it is not the time to try out new ideas, but as a 2nd Shooter I can, I get to look for alternative angles, and quirky details and try out new techniques I have learned. So this makes me a better photographer for my clients.
3. I get inspired by the way other photographers work and I can incorporate this into my own work, and this can be from other photographers of any level. Sometimes the most inspiring people are those new to the industry as they have such fresh ideas.
4. I get to share my knowledge with others. One of the services I offer is to go along with less experienced photographers, and guide them and offer help though out the day. Think of it as on the job training. To the couple I am an assistant, but I have gone out with other photographers, who wanted a bit of help with posing, or they had never photographed a winter wedding before....
5. It keeps me busy. At the time of writing this (26th June) Ive shot a dozen weddings this year already and I only have 3 Saturdays off between now and November! And I expect to book them up too. This keeps my finger firmly on the pulse of wedding photography ensuring I am never off the boil for my own clients!
Here a are a few of my favourite recent shots I have taken whist second shooting.
Taken whilst working with Carla Thomas.
Taken whilst working with Iain Gomes.
Taken whilst working with Chris Martin.
Taken whilst working with Steve Gerrard.
Taken whilst working with Jess Petrie.
Taken whilst working with Anthony Gould-Davies.

Beautiful timeless images presented in a simple black & white format, its all about the expression, whether that is a smile or a more serious look.
I spent 6 years in studio photographing families in bright colours against a white background, and while there is nothing wrong with that type of photography, Its not something I want to carry on shooting. I dont go out of my way to advertise my portrait photography, but it is something I still get asked about quite a lot so I wanted to create a style that was more in fitting with my current branding and something that was different from what everybody else was doing.
Portrait Noir sessions can take place in your own home or I also organise "shoot days" where I photograph a number of clients on the same day, please contact me to book your place.
Lau from French Made, and Sarah from Chateau Macaron slaved in their kitchens to create the cutest french-style patisseries in the most beautiful colours, along with delicious floral selections of Roses and Carnations from The Vintage Floral Design Co. to bring everything together.
My favourite floral piece was the preserved flower crown, so it can be treasured and kept forever!!
Our real scoop was that we were first to get our hands on the latest collection from Sarah at Rose and Aster, who allowed us to showcase her latest pieces! The Pink opal pieces are just to die for!!
We also had treats from my favourite hair accessories girl, What Katy Did Next! Which just looked so fabulous with my dresses!
The inspiration behind the shoot was to create chic Parisian dessert table ideas. In my humble opinion, the key to making an impressive looking spread is . . . more is more! Styling so overwhelmingly delicious, people don't know where to begin! Strawberry Tartlettes, Hand-dusted Macarons towers, and gourmet Ispahans, Hand-piped rose icing, Sugar paste cameos, and Religieuse Profiteroles with beautiful pastel icings in lilac, greens and corals . . . But, it doesn't have to be all cake. The space has to be visually amazing, lots of different things to look at, so we mixed up lots of different beautiful items to entertain the eye . . . pretty stationery, crockery of all sorts, miniture floral arrangements, beautiful fabrics and jewels, buttons and even shoes, stacked it all high, et voila!
This was the first time I have been involved with a behind the scenes video while on a shoot, and I have to admit, I loved it!
It is quite a long video at 12 minutes, but please watch to end for the out-takes.
More photos from the shoot will be online soon....

UK MP’s that have finally approved legislation for same sex marriage in England and Wales; this is brilliant news for the wedding industry and myself as a wedding photographer.
In my opinion, no matter who you are and who you love, we are all equal and marriage is about love and commitment. It should not matter if you are gay or straight.
Over the last few years I have photographed a few civil partnerships of both sexes and would love to photograph more gay weddings in the future
If you are planning a gay marriage and need a wedding photographer please get in touch.
Well hell yes it would!
So we all made a trip down to the grounds of Nutfield Priory on Sunday morning to play with some wedding dresses, Antlers*, a cello and an axe in snow.
* We forgot to use the antlers in the end....Next time....

I first met Miles Allen at a Chamber of Commerce business networking meeting, an unusual place to meet an author pushing his debut novel. But Miles is doing this all off his own back.
His first book “Walkers of Legend” is a pretty gripping read too, I’d certainly recommend it if you like your fantasy fiction stuff.
In Miles’ words "My goal is a story that pulls you in. A story that you want to keep reading. I have categorized it as a fantasy because there is some magic, but really it's just as powerful a story as I could make. The characters too are as real and compelling as I could create them: some are heroes with flaws, others are weak with hidden strengths. They stand against a terrible enemy. Not all of them want to..."
Withthe 2nd part due for release this summer, Miles got in touch as he needed some headshot portraits to go with the promotion of the book. We decided on Rochester as the location as well as being local to us both, the medieval style of town fits in well with the theme of the Walkers of Legend books.
Miles is the first Author I have taken editorial portraits of, he was drawn to me as he liked my style and had seen some of my band and musician promo photography. He was a natural in front of camera, even though he said he felt a bit nervous to begin with I really couldn’t tell.
Please visit the Walkers of Legend website HERE

We started off the the shoot in my office/studio in Dartford, and as it happend my office building was holding a Christmas fair (This was early December) so we managed to pressgang Santa into a few shots too!
Then the fella's took me out for lunch at a local pub (hint to futures bands booking me for shoots)and suggested that we try and get some shots right under the Dartford Bridge. Ive lived in Dartford for 5 years and I knew it was possible to get down to the Thames but I wasnt sure exactly how, so after a pic of trial and error and finding our path blocked by smaller rivers on more than one occasion we made it down to the waterfront. Well worth the effort!
And of course the shot with me in!
If you are in band and need some awesome promo photography, please get in touch.

]]>This shoot was just too awesome, everyone involved put in 110%. We wanted spooky, gothic, Halloween, but without being cheesy or over the top. I think we rocked it!
My visual aim was to create images that were slightly un-nerving and made you think twice about what you were actually looking at, I’m so pleased with the way it turned out, especially the high levitating photograph, (Gwenda is not stuck on to the image in photoshop, she really was that high in the room!)
I would love to create this type of photography on a real wedding, I have recently been asked to shoot a few levitation pictures on a wedding day, but if you are a couple looking for something really different from your wedding photography please get in touch!
If you want to read more about how this styled Wedding shoot at Oxon Hoath was put together have a look at the wantthatwedding.co.uk blog post were it was featured on Halloween
I seems all I do is organise photo shoots with Gwenda from the vintage floral design co. First I photographed her own wedding at The Chantry is East Sussex, then last week I posted up our Tattooed bride styled shoot, and now this spooktacular feature.
They were shot at varies times over the summer and its only now I’m getting round to blogging them. The next shoot with Gwenda is organised for early 2013 it’s another tattoo themed one, with a genuine couple and it’s going to feature in a magazine….buts that’s all I can say about it for now…

]]>As you can imagine with lots of skaters In the house it was very relaxed wedding, and this allowed me to capture lots of natural images as the day unfolded. The Royal Geographic Society is such an amazing venue to get married in, Its grand without being over the top, and the maps on the walls are fascinating to look at…anyway I digress, Enjoy the pictures and if you are looking for a wedding photographer at the Royal Geographic Society, or any London wedding venue please contact me.
The concept behind a styled shoot is to work together with other wedding industry specialists to create something a little bit different away from the pressures of a real wedding. All the photos here were taking using the same techniques that I use when I’m the photographer at a real wedding, so if you like what you see and are looking for a wedding for photographer in Kent, London or anywhere in the UK please give a me a shout on my contact form.

"At this standard, we are viewing images that not only display a high degree of technical ability, but also portray imagination and creativity in execution and presentation. These are important factors that often go hand in hand with higher prices as this qualification is held by the top 10% of practitioners"
Don't worry though, I'm not suddenly going to whack my prices up!
This area of work can be so varied, some clients are looking for headshots against a plain background while others come to me as they like the band and model photography I do and what something a bit more exciting and off the wall to represent their company. Such as this business portrait of success and life coach Dave Kibby.
It is also a popular choice to have a more informal portrait with the office as the backdrop.
Whichever type of business portrait you are looking for to represent your company, please get in touch.

Recently a new company moved into the office building I rent space in, Eight.3 are an LED lighting company with lots of shinny or glowing new products that need photographing. I love product photography or packshots as some call it, esspecially when its raining as much as it has been recently. I get to stay in my nice dry studio taking photographs! I wanted ti create something a bit better that the average shot I had seen of lighting components on the internet. So I went with a similar idea to the timelapse photograph I do for before and after my building and interior design photography.

Jeffrey and Hannahs wedding at the Carlton Club, London was a little different to my usual weddings as they had requested more formal photographs. They said they liked the way Kate and Williams royal wedding groups were posed. So we took all the photographs inside the amazing Carlton Club. It really is a beautiful venue. Jeffrey and Hannah found me though the Lost in Love wedding photography agency, which I am proud to member of, as it is run by one of the countries leading Picture Editors.
While they were sitting down to their wedding Breakfast, I had the idea of mimicking Kate & Wills engagement portraits. Click here to see the Originals. My versions are below.
If you are looking for a Wedding Photographer for your London wedding please get in touch.
However it was an unusual subject, a Bee Hotel. Now I'm used to photographing in Hotels, In fact I was shortlisted for "Interior Architecture Photographer of the year" this year for one of my hotel shoots, but I'd never seen a bee hotel before. The Client was the local Premier Inn and Beefeater restaurant, who will be planting a wildflower garden near their site in Dartford.
If you or your band wants their own badges made up give Pete a shout at Odd/Even
I photographed my 1st wedding of 2012 in January at the beautiful Beauberry House, in Dulwich, London. A venue with plenty of awards under its belt including "Best wedding co-ordinator for London and the South East 2012" going to the very helpful Oleia Leclercq, who was on hand from start to finish to ensure the day went smoothly.
Rachel and Richard had a beautiful day for their London wedding photography, crisp and cold, but not so cold that we couldn't grab a few pictures outside. They had planned their wedding to be a very relaxed informal day, and I loved being their wedding photographer, with the help of Claire Graham who kindly assisted me, we got some beautiful wedding photos between us.
I would like to thank Rachel and Richard for choosing me to be their Beauberry House wedding photographer, here is a sneak peek of the photographs to give you a flavour of their day.
I'll make this a really quick post as the the girls at Love My Dress, are far more eloquent than I.
This was such an amazing wedding to photograph, Cate and Andy put so much effort into every detail....Please have a look at the full blog post over on Love My Dress.
Judges comment: “The emotion of the image was caught at just the right moment and makes the viewer wish that they were there.”
As I posted a couple of weeks back I had been nominated for 2 SWPP Photographer of the year awards.
Well, the award ceremony was held in London on Sunday night, hosted by the Society of Wedding and Portrait photographers. The award winners were announced by TV presenter Phillipa Forester.
Thankfully I didn't have too long to wait for my categories as they where read out in alphabetical order. Sadly I was only a runner up in the Interior Architecture photographer of the Year category, the winner being the extremely talented Maltese photographer Christopher Azzopardi.
But the good news is that I won the Event photographer of the year 2011 for my photograph taken at the Bloodstock Festival.
I'm the one with the moustache, which was partly grown as a dare for the awards ceremony, I didn't even know I had been nominated for an award when I accepted the challenge!
Press Release:
'Event Photographer of the Year 2011' has been awarded to Dartford based photographer Martin Hobby. The Society of Wedding and Portrait Photographers (SWPP) presented Martin with this prestigious accolade at their 2011 annual awards ceremony. The dinner was hosted this year by SWPP’s own Juliet Jones and television presenter Philippa Forrester.
These are two areas of work I absolutely love, and I am up against some well know industry names so to even get this far is an honour!
I get to attend a very posh awards dinner in London in a couple of weeks time to find out if I have won, so wish me luck and I'll let you know how it goes.....
